Position Summary: 

The Manager of Host Systems manages, supports, and performs operation of the Online and Batch processing environment(s) and all associated peripheral equipment and connections for the core financial processing system. Configures, automates, and audits all batch and online processing to optimize delivery channel access, production quality and system security.  Responsible for client service quality for questions regarding supported software and computing platforms.  Leads computer operations staff and daily processing operations in support of the Credit Union requirements for operational quality and timely information distribution, and to optimize processing efficiency. Defines procedures and processes for problem resolution and support.  Acts as point of contact for the escalation for operational events; evaluates business impacts, identifies the event type, coordinates resolution and response, as needed.  Assists in the development of standard operational procedures for the organization. This position is eligible for the credit union’s telecommute policy.


 Essential Functions:

  • Provides leadership for all core system operations, including team management.
  • Ensures physical and data security of the host systems and information housed in the data center and IT areas. Responsible for maintenance, repair and inventory of all host system-related equipment and interfaces, including but not limited to the interconnectivity of peripheral equipment through the LAN/WAN network and Internet connections.  
  • Maintains highest levels of data processing security and database backups. 
  • Oversees the completion of computer operations work assignments, creation of daily and other cyclical schedules for host processing systems, capacity planning, disaster recovery preparedness, 24x7 system support, data management, security practices implementation, end user support, software updates, and associated billings. 
  • Develops and maintains system updates and documentation as well as recovery procedures for system error handling and processing disruptions.  
  • Schedules, performs, and/or oversees testing and loading of software updates, operating system updates and Image software updates as needed.  
  • Provides support to users for software and hardware problems for both the host system and online application environment.  Acts as primary liaison to our current credit union services provider to all user related, application processing or connectivity issues.  
  • Tracks, researches, and resolves problems submitted by users from other departments as well as other duties as assigned by IT management.  
  • Trains computer operations staff in day-to-day processing functions as well as advance computing techniques as appropriate.  
  • Supervises all computer operations staff and daily processing of the data center.   Schedule work assignments of all computer operations staff and generate day, night, monthly, quarter-end and year-end schedules. 
  • Coordinates output generation, reviewing for accuracy and distributing credit union reports as needed.  Acts as backup for computer operations staff, as needed.  Assists with end of month/quarter/year processing as needed.   
  • Ensures that day-to-day data processing functions run smoothly.   Develops and maintains system support schedules for coverage and updates support.  
  • Coordinates special processing jobs for the day and night shifts.  
  • Coordinates and maintains operator documentation and job streams.  
  • Updates, supports and promotes operational policy and procedure efficiencies and guidelines established in the following manuals: 
    1. Host Standard Operating Procedure Manuals
    2. Online Software System Reference Guides 
    3. Database Change Management Process Guides
    4. Operation, Security and Disaster Recovery Manuals
  • Identifies and recommends ways to continuously streamline or improve the work process and/or the work environment. 
  • Works together with vendors on new technology and system updates.  
  • Screens, diagnoses and refers client inquiries and work requests regarding to PC and related sub-systems support.  
  • Performs major troubleshooting and diagnostic routines to identify problems relating to hardware applications software and host communications.  
  • Assist the department in tracking resources through the input of issue details into a tracking database for all support issues.  
  • Performs user callback to verify acceptable problem resolution and work order closure for Operations staff.  
  • Assists team, vendors, and clients in the resolution of complex issues and problems where judgment is required to resolve problems and recommend solutions, as appropriate. 
  • Works on special projects (i.e. Symitar software updates, new software modules and associated in-house software) and is responsible for providing data communications support and user training as deemed appropriate. 
  • Performs special projects and other responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: BS/BA degree in Computer Technology or related discipline (or equivalent experience).  Ongoing courses in business and information systems are necessary to develop and maintain position proficiency. 
  • Experience: Three to five years of increasing experience in managing teams and related disciplines, including information systems, personal computers, data processing operations, training, and database management, preferably in a credit union or other financial institution environment.   Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.  Requires use of various computer keyboards and video display terminals.  Excellent written and oral communication skills required.   Experience with the IBM AIX Unix servers with the following subsystems:  
    1. Line or GUI editor utility (VI, other 3rd party UNIX shell editor)  
    2. Output Queue and OS management utilities for AIX environment 
    3. Job Queue and File management utilities (OpCon, Move-It, etc.) 
  • ‘Hands-on’ experience on the Symitar EPISYS software platform or similar core system in a credit union environment.   
    1. Knowledge of RepGens (Power-Ons) development methodologies desirable. 
    2. HTML, Java, SQL scripting, etc., a definite plus. 
    3. In-depth understanding of back and front-office processes, third party product interfaces. 
  • Skills and Abilities: Ability to develop test plans, scripts and reporting for all backup processes and media, release and host update related processes. Comprehensive understanding of information technology and ability to integrate changes into existing systems required.  Ability to analyze and correlate information from monitoring agencies and problem management toolset to identify potential trends in service delivery breakdowns and determine appropriate action needed.  Strong analytical, service, organization and communication skills.  Strong service, and team orientation.  Broad knowledge of the total organization's requirements for information systems support. Understand and optimize use of the host processing environment, subsystems, utilities and peripherals.  High level understanding of online command matrix, administrative interfaces and configuration file structures. Understand in-depth the operating system and error identification/recovery procedures.  Must have a thorough knowledge of the file system, OS utilities and command structure.   Design and development of processes, reports and/or sub-systems to provide information access, automation, or processing efficiency in support of business objectives. Ability to interact with other credit union departments to develop business case or processing requirements needed to meet client requests. Responsible for scope of work definitions, change management and process documentation for all development activities.

  • Travel Required: Limited travel required.  Any travel during assigned shifts requires ability to operate personal vehicle. 
  • Hours Required: Exempt employee with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some alternate work schedules. Hours may fluctuate moderately to accommodate business development activities. Some after-hours work is required to ensure minimal impact to business operations.
