Community-Created Mosaic Art Installation Finds a Home at Sycamore Grove Park
LIVERMORE, Calif. — A new community-created public art installation by local artists Thomasin Dewhurst and Anne Giancola is now on display at Sycamore Grove Park, bringing art and environmental education together along the park's trails.
Created through a grant from the Alameda County Clean Water Program, the project was led by Dewhurst and Giancola and included participation from student artists. The completed artwork was presented to the LARPD Board of Directors in April 2026 and approved for installation at Sycamore Grove Park. LARPD completed the installation in July.
The artwork features seven handcrafted mosaic stepping stones, including five 3-foot-diameter stones and two 18-inch stones. Constructed of reinforced concrete with mosaic glass and cement paint, the mosaics illustrate the journey of water from rainfall to local creeks and ultimately the San Francisco Bay, encouraging visitors to consider the importance of protecting the local watershed.
"We're excited to have this artwork become part of Sycamore Grove Park," said Joseph Benjamin, Recreation Manager. "The installation fits naturally with the park and gives visitors another way to connect with and learn about the environment around them."
The mosaic stepping stones add a new artistic and educational element to Sycamore Grove Park and reflect the park's role as a place for recreation, exploration, and connection with the natural environment. The installation is located near the native garden, accessible from the park's Wetmore Road entrance. Visitors are encouraged to explore the installation during their next visit.
