Granada High School Teacher John Thayer Named Alameda County Teacher of the Year
October 3, 2025 - Livermore, CA - The Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) selected Livermore’s own, John Thayer, mathematics teacher at Granada High School, as the 2025 Alameda County Teacher of the Year. Thayer was chosen from among 19 educators representing 17 school districts and regional occupation programs countywide for his innovative teaching, deep commitment to students, and leadership in bilingual and project-based education.
“It's been incredible feeling all the love after receiving this recognition,” expressed Thayer. “It makes me realize that every single person who helps our students– from the classroom to the front office, to the cafeteria– should be celebrated like this. We work hundreds of miracles together every day and I wouldn't want to miss it!”
Thayer, a veteran teacher of more than 20 years, has dedicated his career to making mathematics accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all students. His teaching of bilingual math courses incorporates project-based learning that connects math to real-world applications such as bridge design, food truck businesses, and public art projects.
In addition to teaching, Thayer has coached English and Spanish debate teams, helping students to develop research, communication, and critical thinking skills. Under his guidance, teams have advanced to regional and state-level competitions. He also leads college field trips for emergent bilingual students and works closely with families through the school’s English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC).
“Mr. Thayer’s selection as Alameda County’s Teacher of the year is well deserved. John is an impactful educator. He cares about kids and creates a classroom where students feel empowered to take risks, discover their strengths, and build confidence. Granada is lucky to have a teacher like him,” shared Clark Conover, Principal of Granada High School.
Thayer describes his philosophy of teaching as “creating spaces for students to succeed in small and big ways, showing them that I believe in them, and waiting for them to teach me how to better teach them.” His ability to connect with students, especially those who may feel discouraged or disconnected from school, has earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, students, and families alike.
Julian Avilla, Granada’s Math Department Chair, has the unique perspective of admiring John’s teaching as both a former student and now a colleague. “I first met John in 2000 when he was my Trigonometry teacher,” shared Avilla. “Over the last 25 years, I have witnessed first hand his exceptional dedication and passion for teaching. His ability to connect with students and teach them math at all levels is inspiring.”
Thayer was recently honored alongside fellow honorees from the county at the annual Alameda County Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony on September 25, 2025. As the Alameda County Teacher of the Year, he will also be eligible for consideration as the California State Teacher of the Year.
“We wish John the very best as he is considered for State Teacher of the Year,” expressed Superintendent Torie Gibson. “But regardless of that outcome, we are thrilled that John’s exceptional teaching was recognized at the county level. His commitment and impact on our students serves as a model for us all.”
